Sympathy

October 7, 2025

Sympathy is the emotion we express when we feel sorrow or concern for another person’s misfortune. Distinct from empathy, sympathy keeps an important and sometimes necessary emotional distance: you recognize the suffering, but you don’t absorb the feeling itself.
