Sympathy
Sympathy is the emotion we express when we feel sorrow or concern for another person’s misfortune. Distinct from empathy, sympathy keeps an important and sometimes necessary emotional distance: you recognize the suffering, but you don’t absorb the feeling itself. While this detached concern can facilitate appropriate social responses like sending a note or offering simple support, it risks devolving into pity if not expressed carefully. Sympathy remains a crucial social mechanism for acknowledging pain, but true connection often requires moving beyond “feeling for” and engaging in the deeper process of empathy.
